Many NHS managers do not feel confident in speaking to their staff about mental health, as it's often perceived as a challenging issue. Mental health can fluctuate along a spectrum in the same way that physical health does and there may be times when it is better than others. Mental health problems should be supported in the same, honest and consistent way that physical health problems are. Placing health and wellbeing at the heart of business can help employers attract and retain talent, improve productivity and happiness, and positively impact the bottom line.
Educating the workforce on the availability of such programmes where they can find support in a confidential and respectful manner, will help to address personal challenges before they become overwhelming.

This is a much needed initiative. Managers play a huge role in staff wellbeing, and the statistics show that managers are not well equipped to deal with poor mental health in their team. Stress and mental ill health are such prevalent causes of illness and absence at work, it is paramount that managers gain greater understanding of how to help and support their staff, to prevent the stress of poor management adding to the problem. I hope that this guidance will be taken up by managers across the country and in all sectors.
